State Rep. Scott Wiggam | The Ohio House of Representatives
State Representative Scott Wiggam announced that a new law has been signed to assist incarcerated Ohioans in establishing their legal identity by providing them with state identification cards. This initiative is aimed at aiding inmates who are U.S. citizens as they prepare for reintegration into society.
The program will enable soon-to-be-released inmates to file an application with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles via the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. "Incarceration is about rehabilitating inmates to be reintegrated into society," stated Wiggam. "ID cards are a necessary part to getting employment, applying for housing or driving a car. This legislation provides a path to give inmates an ID card upon their release, while cutting out some unnecessary steps."
Currently, inmates receive ID cards from the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, which are then used to obtain an official ID card through the BMV. The newly signed legislation will streamline this process by eliminating these additional steps.
Senate Bill 198 is set to become effective in 90 days.
