State Rep. Scott Wiggam | The Ohio House of Representatives
In a move to safeguard first responders, the Ohio House passed legislation on Wednesday, proposed by State Representative Scott Wiggam (R-Wayne County), that would exempt certain sensitive information about these individuals from being disclosed under public records law.
Currently, Ohio's public records law allows access to work schedules, redaction request forms, and affidavits of the state's first responders through public records requests. However, House Bill 265 aims to protect these documents from public use.
“These men and women are in our communities making them a safer place,” said Wiggam. “They protect us in our time of need and with legislation we can protect them and their families when they step away from the job.”
The bill is designed to shield first responders and their families as these records contain sensitive and personal information including addresses. Having cleared the House, House Bill 265 now proceeds to the Ohio Senate for consideration.
