COLUMBUS – The House Transportation Committee yesterday unanimously passed House Bill 350, which will dedicate a portion of State Route 44 between Mentor Avenue and Prouty Road as Lance Corporal Austin B. Schwenk Memorial Highway, announced State Representatives Jamie Callender (R-Concord) and Daniel Troy (D-Wickliffe).
Lance Corporal (LCpl) Austin B. Schwenk was killed in October 2023 at Camp Lejeune where he served as a 2171, electro-optical ordinance repairer with the 2nd battalion, 6th Marine division. LCpl Schwenk graduated from Riverside Highschool in 2022 and is remembered as an avid athlete, lover of cars, and someone who always dreamed of joining the United States Marine Corps.
State Representative Jamie Callender (R-Concord) expressed, “Lance Corporal Schwenk was a proud son of Lake County who stepped up to answer the call of his country.” He also stated, "Dedicating part of State Route 44 is a fitting memorial to his courage and commitment to serve others."
Representative Troy shared his hopes, saying, “I am hopeful that the General Assembly will support this effort by Rep. Callender and myself to honor the memory of Lance Corporal Schwenk for his service to our nation so tragically cut short.”
House Bill 350 has now advanced to the House floor for a vote.
