State Representative Scott Wiggam (R-Wayne County) has introduced a House Joint Resolution (HJR4) that aims to protect Ohioans from mandatory mask mandates. The resolution, if passed, would allow the voters of Ohio to amend the Ohio Constitution and ensure that individuals are not required to wear medical masks or other facial coverings in public buildings or establishments.

Wiggam introduced the resolution in response to the concerns raised by his constituents, particularly regarding the impact of mask mandates on children's education. He stated, "A great number of my constituents wanted their children to be able to attend school without having their face covered, and their ability to learn stunted."

The resolution seeks to give citizens a voice on the issue of mandatory face coverings in places of public accommodation, including schools. Wiggam emphasized the importance of providing choice to individuals, stating, "This joint resolution will finally give citizens of our state a voice on the issue of mandatory face coverings in places of public accommodation, where public services are rendered, including our schools."

To ensure clarity, the resolution clearly defines "places of public accommodation" where masks cannot be required for entry. This includes government buildings, schools, and grocery stores. The aim is to prevent discrimination against individuals who either choose not to wear facial coverings or are physically unable to do so.

The resolution has already had its first hearing in the House Public Health Policy Committee and is currently awaiting additional hearings. If passed, it will provide Ohioans with the opportunity to have a say in the implementation of mandatory mask mandates.

As the debate surrounding mask mandates continues, Representative Wiggam's resolution offers a potential solution that respects individual choice and addresses the concerns of his constituents. With further discussions and deliberations, Ohio may soon see a constitutional amendment that protects individuals' rights when it comes to wearing facial coverings in public spaces.
