Wooster installs time capsule during student center renovations

29

Last summer, as construction was underway on the renovation of the Lowry Student Center, a time capsule planted in 1968 was discovered and opened, revealing several items from those times. The items discovered from that time capsule included a copy of The Wooster Daily Record from May 15, 1968, two issues of The Voice – Wooster’s campus newspaper still in circulation today – from the 1967-68 school year, photos from the times, a College course catalogue, a College centennial medal, and the a copy of the study completed by the Union Planning Committee for the Lowry Student Center.

After this discovery, the decision was made to install a time capsule from the 2021-22 school year during the construction of the Lowry Center renovation. Courage Kusena ’23, who serves as a student representative on the Lowry Committee, helped garner ideas for the time capsule in consultation with Scot Council and the student body.

The final list of items included in the time capsule are:

  • Masks (several styles from cloth that were used at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic to KN-95 masks that are used currently)
  • A Covid-19 test
  • Issues of The Voice from April 2022
  • The Black Manifesto
  • Photos of Sunflower the Cat
  • A fanny pack with I.S. Monday swag and COW Bucks
  • A sticker sheet with the new College logo
  • An article about President Bolton’s time at Wooster
  • An ampersand t-shirt
  • Lowry planning documents
  • A curricular document entitled: A Wooster Education
  • The President’s Annual Report (2021-22) on the Connect, Create, Discover strategic plan
  • Wooster Magazine issue focused on racial justice
  • An ARCH medal
The time capsule was installed inside a stone of the Lowry building with ‘2023’ inscribed on the front during a short ceremony on Monday, June 13.
